Four girls in a light plane - relieved to arrive and enjoy the tranquility and hospitality.
There is a podcast about the journey here : http://www.planecrazydownunder.com/2011/10/20/pcdu-episode-76-air-wilpena/
"It was a delight to walk below the dappled canopy of the sugar gums with the hum of the native bees and the glimpse of a magnificent eagle as it circled above looking for prey. We four eagles were glad to have landed and be stretching our legs though. On the hike to the lookout, the rich red escarpment of the Pound is visible in glimpses, and as we ambled along, the only sound to perforate this idyllic place was the voice of a geographically frustrated L1, “Are we in the bloody Pound yet?” (It’s hard to tell when you’re walking). I was just focused on my pounding heart while being overtaken by small children, and geriatrics in heavy jumpers. The half hour walk was worth every wheeze, and the panoramic Pound view from the top superb. We sat on the rocks for a couple of hours enjoying lunch and the serenity of altitude without engines."
All I can say is wow. My grandfather and I had been planning this trip for a couple of months and it was magnificent. The Camp grounds were great and the Kangaroos were even better.
We did the Hills homestead hike and the Wangara lookout hike, we saw some amazing wildlife and had a great time. My only regret is only doing the short hike but next time I plan on doing many.
Our Stay at Wilpena was AMAZING! All the staff are so friendly and went out of their way to help us organise our 4WD tour and flights before we got there. We flew over Lake Eyre which is something that is a must to see. My husband was having difficulty walking and the staff did not have an issue moving us to a room with disabled facilities and bringing our coffee's to the table outside the shop looking at the beautiful bush land. I was still able to do some bushwalks in the area and would reccoment Mount Ohlssen which has brilliant views from the top. Its a beautiful time of year to visit Wilpena while spring is bringing out all the colour. Overall service and facilities were 10/10 and we will be back again like many times before. Thanks again to the team at Wilpena for making our stay so carefree and enjoyable. Elizabeth Tennings, GC, QLD
To all the staff at Wilpena Pound Resort.
I would just like to thank you for a wonderful week. I know how hard everyone worked to make the Art expedition possible and I really appreciate the flexibility you allowed us.
I would especially like to thank Matt, Kyla, the two Leanne's and the wonderful Terry for his brilliant tour.
Everyone was very impressed with the rooms, the food and the friendly service. We are all looking forward to coming back soon.
(though you may not be!!!)
Warmest regards,

We had a WONDERFUL time at Wilpena Pound Resort.
Emily was incredibly helpful, she had everything arranged for us and scheduled our tours so they were spread out across the time we had. It’s impossible to say what we loved the most. The accommodation is great for families being able to self cater or dine in the restaurant is a bonus. The food was very good in the restaurant, turns out the cook had previously worked at Wrotham Park Lodge, we stayed there last year. The location is superb. We loved being able to walk from our room up into the pound and did it every day. The day we went for a longer walk up to the lookouts and across the pound we caught the little bus up to the top of the track, saving our energy for the climb up to the top of the lookout. Wow! What a view! The wildlife - lizards and a taipan, we came across on the way won over my 11 year old daughter as well!
We did the tour around Arkaba station in the landcruiser with Ian, just the 5 of us. We enjoyed it so much we went back and booked for their afternoon tour as well. The kids were fascinated by the geology of the area and had to visit the museum in Adelaide when we went back there to see their new displays on the fossils of the Flinders.
We loved flying over the pound, we did that at the end and it put everything we had already seen into perspective, kids had never been in a small plane and it was a gorgeous clear morning (as they all were) so they are hooked!
On the way back to Adelaide we all decided we needed to do another “road trip” and come back again driving all the way and including Kangaroo Island. We may do it at Christmas or wait until Easter next year.
We have been busily telling everyone they have to visit Wilpena. SA has always been somewhere we have driven through to get to somewhere else…but now we are converts.
