look beyond the spectacular panoramas for stories – stories
of which the unaccompanied visitor is unaware. Walk with a guide
and discover 800 million years of earth history, a fascinating
and complex fauna and flora, and the compelling human history of
Aboriginal and European peoples who shared a powerful instinct
for survival and challenging country.
Old Wilpena Homestead
Nestled between the ABC Range and the northern ramparts of Wilpena
Pound is Old Wilpena Station, one of South Australia’s
oldest and best preserved pastoral settlements. Walk along
Wilpena Creek past magnificent stands of River red gums, with
stunning
views of the Pound wall in the distance. As you pass through
the station gate you will step back 150 years to the early
days of pastoral runs.
Explore a world of improvisation, dogged with
self-sufficiency and a powerful instinct for survival. Learn
how the land changed with European settlement and how present
day pastoralists and park managers are dealing with those changes.
Enjoy a cuppa and cake on the verandah of the old Homestead or “Government
House” as the early homesteads were known.

Champagne and Shadows
A leisurely afternoon walk to Old Wilpena Station provides the
best there is to see at this outstanding heritage-listed site.
Described in 1856 as “the prettiest place in the Far North”,
Old Wilpena Station will not disappoint. Follow the Interpretive
trail with your guide and explore the evocative interiors of
the outbuildings, among the oldest and best preserved of their
type in South Australia.
Be silenced by the extraordinary beauty
of the great River red gums backlit by the dying sun. As the
evening approaches gather near the “Homestead and enjoy
the magical last light of the day with a glass of bubbly and
nibbles.
A memorable afternoon walk to one of South Australia’s most
charming heritage places.

Remarkable Reds
Red is the signature colour of inland Australia. Red sand, red
soil, red rocks define more than half of the Australian continent.
Join your guide for an exploration of Flinders Ranges reds – red
gums, red kangaroos, red sandstones and red sunsets. Marvel
at the majestic red gums and discover why these giants are
icons
of the inland. As you watch them grazing in the late afternoon
light, learn about the different species of kangaroos in the
Wilpena area.
Ponder the awesome geological history of the
region as you watch the walls of Wilpena Pound change colour,
warmed
by the dying sun. Over a glass of South Australian red, enjoy
the special charm of a Flinders sunset, as it reduces the
Pound wall to an exquisite silhouette.

Guided Walk into Wilpena Pound
A leisurely walk along Wilpena Creek into Wilpena Pound and on to the Old Hills Homestead where you can learn about the hardships the Hills family had to face during the turn of the century. There is an optional hike up to Wangarra Hill lookout which offers panoramic views of Wilpena Pound.
Be silenced by the extraordinary beauty of the great River red gums as you nibble on cake and coffee by the Old Homestead.

in the area. Here are just a few.
Wilpena Pound offers the bushwalker a large variety of excellent
walking trails, some of short duration others can take days
to complete. The trails listed here are generally within the National
Park and are well mapped and marked. A regular Shuttle Bus
service
to the entrance of the Pound is available. (Fee applies)
Hills Homestead – from Wilpena Pound Resort allow one and
a half hours. This easy Walk provides an insight into local History.
From the Wilpena Pound car park walk along the main track then
take either the upper track or Sliding Rock Track to the Homestead.
Wangarra Lookouts - from Wilpena Pound Resort allow two hours.
A short walk up Wangarra Hill behind Hills Homestead takes you
to the lower (5 mins) and top (20 mins) lookouts which offer panoramic
views of Wilpena Pound.
The Drought Busters – allow one hour return. Discover how
plants survive the water shortages in arid conditions. From Wilpena
Pound Resort walk 300m along the Pound Gap road to the Mt Ohlssen
Bagge trail. Follow this across Wilpena Creek to the junction of
the Drought Busters Trail. This is s scenic loop with signs explaining
how local plants survive arid conditions.
Mt Ohlssen Bagge – allow three hours. Although the walk
up to the top is strenuous, the effort is rewarded by excellent
views of Wilpena Pound and the surrounding ranges. From Wilpena
Pound Resort walk 300m along the Pound Gap road.
Arkaroo Rock – allow one hour walk from the Arkaroo Rock
car park. A scenic route leads to this important Adnyamathanha
site which depicts the formation of Wilpena Pound. On the rock
shelter walls ochre and charcoal images depict bird tracks, snake
lines, waterholes and people.
Malloga – allow eight hours. Edeowie Creek has the carved
an impressive gorge through the sheer quartzite cliffs. The trail
is over a moderate grade but avoid wet weather walking. From the
entrance of the Pound, walk via Hills Homestead to Cooinda Camp
(allow 2 hours). From Cooinda the track heads North West to Edeowie
Creek and Malloga falls (allow one and a half hours).
St Mary’s Peak – allow six to seven hours. The highest
peak in the Flinders ranges, St Mary’s offers magnificent
panoramic views of Wilpena Pound and surrounding country. This
is a strenuous hike.
The direct route to St Mary’s peak commences from Wilpena
Pound. The first hour is relatively easy but the final hour to
Tanderra Saddle is steep, stony and exposed. From the saddle trail,
markers indicate the route to the peak. This section is difficult
and can be dangerous so take care: do not attempt to climb it
in wet weather.
Instead of returning along the same route, try a pleasant walk
back to Wilpena Pound Resort through the Pound. Signs indicate
the route from Tanderra Saddle, via Cooinda Camp and Hill’s
Homestead to Wilpena Pound Resort.
